Current Problems Facing Our Community that Gretchen Plans to Tackle

Gretchen Shepherd Romey is running for City Council to preserve and protect San Marino -- especially its legacy of community, beautiful neighborhoods, historic homes and mature trees, public safety and residents' security, and financial dependability and transparency.

For over two decades, Gretchen has been continuously active volunteering and leading many local civic, charitable, and educational organizations. She knows San Marino from the ground up literally (from her years of community service as part of the San Marino Garden Club).

If elected to City Council, those decades of knowledge, community service, long-term dedication to our City, and experience will enable her to meaningfully contribute and make an even greater impact for the betterment of San Marino for its residents and their families.

Gretchen's primary goals, if elected to City Council, will be to reverse the recent rise in crime, the preserve our community with its historic resources and neighborhoods, as well as mature trees, and create a financially responsible and transparent City government, and adopt a plan to reduce our unfunded pension debt and improve our infrastructure.

If you believe these issues matter too, please join our list of supporters, add your endorsement, and make sure to vote Gretchen Shepherd Romey for San Marino City Council on November 7th!

Historic Preservation and Neighborhood Continuity

During the past decade, San Marino has seen rampant residential development resulting in the demolition of historically significant homes, as well as the accompanying landscape including healthy mature specimen trees.

Supporting Law Enforcement and Empowering Residents & Uniting Our Neighborhoods

When Gretchen moved here over 20 years ago, San Marino had long been considered an extremely safe community.  Recently, despite our police department’s best efforts, San Marino has seen a surprising increase in crime; particularly burglaries and home invasions that threaten our families.  This recent spike in criminal activity is cause for alarm.

The best crime prevention tool ever invented is having a good neighbor!  In fact, neighbors working together in cooperation with law enforcement can make the best crime-fighting teams.

That's is why I want to re-engage our community with a renewed Neighborhood Watch program.  "Neighborhood Watch" is a crime prevention program which enlists the active participation of citizens in cooperation with law enforcement to reduce crime in their communities.

It involves:
• neighbors getting to know each other and working together in a program of mutual assistance;
• citizens being trained to recognize and report suspicious activities in their neighborhoods; and
• implementation of crime prevention techniques such as home security systems, residential security cameras, etc.

You may hear it called Neighborhood Watch, Home Alert, Citizen Crime Watch or Block Watch. The idea is the same: Neighbors looking out for each other and Gretchen wants to increase the involvement of all our residents in this important crime-fighting tool.

Ensuring Financial Responsibility, Efficiency & Transparency

YOU deserve to have your taxes be spent efficiently and diligently, and it is unacceptable if our city is wasting taxpayer money; such monies which could otherwise go to support our community, improve our infrastructure and emergency services, and reduce our long term liabilities.
